Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of this post is to provide support in the administration of the UNICC’s Virtualization infrastructure as well as customer dedicated infrastructures.

Objectives of the Programme:

The objective of the Centre is to provide trusted ICT services and digital business solutions to its Clients and Partner Organizations.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The incumbent will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the Virtualization services Team Lead (OPBO) in the Platform and Infrastructure Operations Unit, within the Operations Division (OP). The incumbent will perform the following duties but not limited to:

Design and Implementation:

  •  Configure, install and maintain virtualized environments using OLVM and KVM
  • Under guidance of the team lead, set up and implement solutions to meet the organization’s virtualization needs

System Administration:

  • Perform regular system updates, patch management, and configuration changes
  • Ensure the security of the virtualization infrastructure by implementing best practices and maintaining compliance with industry standards

Monitoring and Optimization:

  • Monitor the performance and health of virtual machines and hosts
  • Perform performance tuning and optimization of virtualized environments
  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks and performance issues proactively

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for issues related to OLVM/KVM environments
  • Resolve incidents and problems, ensuring minimal downtime and impact on business operations

Automation and Scripting:

  • Use and maintain scripts and automation tools to streamline administrative tasks
  • Implement automation solutions for provisioning, configuration management and monitoring

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Under guidance of the team lead, collaborate with other IT teams, stakeholders, and vendors to plan and execute virtualization projects
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders, providing updates on project status, issues, and resolutions
  • Following the unit’s best practices, provide training and guidance to junior team members and other staff as needed

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in virtualization and Linux technologies
  • Evaluate new technologies and tools that could enhance the virtualization infrastructure

Project Management:

  • Participate in virtualization-related projects
  • Collaborate in the management of project timelines, resources, and risks effectively

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of the virtualization infrastructure and related processes
  • Prepare and present regular reports on the performance, capacity, and health of the virtualized environment

Other:

  • Provide other ad hoc support either within the team or in other teams as required – this includes the participation in special projects or support to service delivery for short period of time on a part-time or full time basis upon request from the senior management
  • The incumbent may be required to act as Officer-In-Charge of the team, during the absence of the Team Leader

Recruitment Profile

Experience and Skills required:

Essential:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of relevant IT work experience in supporting and/or operating enterprise Virtualization Infrastructure and related services. A completed university degree from an accredited institution will be counted towards minimum work experience requirements
  • Proven hands-on experience in administering and troubleshooting market leader hypervisor solutions and related products
  • Deep understanding of KVM hypervisor architecture and its components
  • Proficiency in setting up, configuring, and managing OLVM environments
  • Strong knowledge of Linux system administration, including installation, configuration and maintenance
  • Experience with storage management and integration in virtualized environments
  • Expertise with scripting languages such as Python and Ansible for automation and task management

Desirable:

  • Experience with other virtualization platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, or Xen
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef

Education:

Essential:

  • Successful completion of secondary school education or its equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in IT

Desirable:

  • Relevant certifications such as Oracle Linux Certified Implementation Specialist, Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), or similar Linux/virtualization certifications
  • ITIL, ISO20000, PRINCE2 certifications

Languages:

  • English: Expert knowledge is required
  • Knowledge of the local language of the Duty Station is an advantage

Eligibility:

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Compensation:

Annual Salary Estimation (net of tax at single rate):

  • Valencia, Spain: EUR 48,769
